Strategically located along Kuwait’s coastline, Souq Sharq enjoys excellent accessibility, just five minutes from Kuwait City and the Central Business District and approximately 15 minutes from Kuwait International Airport. The project’s significance lies not only in its economic potential but also in its ability to reunite Sharq with its waterfront—physically, socially, and symbolically—through a human-centered urban approach.
Sharq, meaning “East,” is Kuwait City’s historic waterfront quarter, once home to fishermen, pearl divers, and dhow builders. The 1950s oil boom reshaped the city, pushing the sea behind reclaimed land.
Souq Sharq was established in 1998, reconnecting the city to the sea and marking a turning point in the area’s urban revival. Today, URC’s redevelopment vision redefines Sharq by restoring this connection, creating shaded, pedestrian-friendly spaces that honor the past while embracing the future. The project is organized around several key components that together form a vibrant waterfront destination, including the Fish Market, Retail Area, The Ring Plaza, Nautical Area, Leisure and Entertainment Area, and a dedicated Youth Area.
